The original Smithville Inn was built in 1787 by James Baremore, just two years before George Washington was elected President. It was just one room on a well-traveled stagecoach route and it may not have actually been planned as an inn, but houses
were far between in those days and |
word of the Baremore’s hospitality spread until innkeeping soon became their living.
Township meetings and elections were held at Smithville Inn between 1824 and 1879 at which time a Town Hall was built and is still standing as a private residence on Moss Mill Road. |
