Historic Smitville
BACk Back
The original Smithville Inn was built in 1787 by James Baremore, just two years before George Washington was elected President. It was just one room on a well-traveled stagecoach route and it may not have actually been planned as an inn, but houses
were far between in those days and
word of the Baremore’s hospitality spread until innkeeping soon became their living.

Township meetings and elections were held at Smithville Inn between 1824 and 1879 at which time a Town Hall was built and is still standing as a private residence on Moss Mill Road.
